There are a number of prostate supplements i.e. supplements to the normal diet that may help to maintain good prostate health, that are reported to help prevent the development of prostate cancer. Whether or not these prostate supplements actually have a beneficial effect remains to be proven however a few clinical trials have so far provided positive results.

One of the most highly researched prostate supplements is a chemical called lycopene. This simple antioxidant is found mainly in tomatoes and some other types of vegetable, thus any tomato-based food stuffs and green leafy vegetables are classed as beneficial in the diets of males. Lycopene is thought to protect vulnerable proteins in prostate cells from damage meaning that they can’t become cancerous and develop into a tumour.

In addition to lycopene Vitamin C, Vitamin E, selenium and resveratrol are also all being researched as possible prostate supplements because of their antioxidant properties. Resveratrol is found in red wine and has, according to some sources, been shown to significantly reduce the risk of prostate cancer if four or more glasses of red wine are drank each week. Its antioxidant properties mean that it might be able travel around the body ‘mopping up’ free radicals which are dangerous atoms produced during normal chemical reactions. Free radicals are thought to damage cells and possibly cause the genetic mutations that account for many forms of cancer.

The research that has so far been carried out regarding diet and prostate supplements and how they might effect mans chances of developing prostate cancer has provided some very promising results however until further research has been performed the scientists are refusing to say that prostate supplements can in fact help to protect against prostate cancer. Luckily, numerous large companies are looking into different prostate supplements and so the scope of research is really quite varied.

Until prostate supplements are proven to help in the cancer battle men are advised to eat a healthy balanced diet that is low in saturated fat and high in fruit, vegetables and fibre.
