Poor prostate health can lead to a number of conditions that range from simple bacterial infections through to prostate cancer.

The prostate gland may only be a very small gland however it’s positioning around the urethra i.e. the tube that takes urine out of the body, means that any inflammation or growth that results from poor prostate health can cause major problems with regards to urination. Imagine a small ball with a drinking straw inserted straight through it, well this is how the prostate gland encompasses the urethra. Thus when the prostate swells the tube is constricted and the normal flow of urine is affected.

Poor prostate health can manifest itself as Prostatitis (inflammation due to infection), Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (growth that isn’t cancerous) and prostate cancer however the symptoms of each of these conditions are very similar because of the effect they have on the urethra and the bladder.

There are a number of factors thought to be related to poor prostate health including diet, exercise, genetics, age, race and hormone levels. Unfortunately, it is only possible to control a few of these factors and so the ones that can be influenced should be from a young age. For example, you can’t control your age, race or genetic history however you can control what you eat and how much exercise you do so that the risk of developing poor prostate health is reduced. Hormone levels can be controlled but it requires specialised medications to do it.

Many researchers and doctors now believe that a healthy diet that is low in saturated fat and low in dairy products can help to maintain prostate health. In addition regular exercise and abstinence from excessive alcohol consumption, nicotine products and recreational drugs can also keep prostate health high.

If this is in fact true then there is no reason why the number of new prostate cancer cases diagnosed each year shouldn’t fall dramatically, leaving only the cases that are initiated by the factors that are beyond control.

Unfortunately the exact cause of prostate cancer and BPH is still not known however if there is a possibility that maintaining good prostate health can help to prevent such diseases then every man should feel obligated to do what they can – after all, it may save their life.
