Prostate Doctors - A Critical Resource for Preventing Cancer

Prostate doctors are technically known as urologists and these are the professionals that men will be referred to with a prostate problem. Although the prostate gland is not part of the urinary system, it encapsulated the tube that urine flows through to exit the body and so problems of the prostate commonly affect urination and the urinary system.

Prostate doctors are trained to be able to diagnose inflammation or growth of the prostate gland by means of a digital examination. This involves inserting a lubricated, gloved finger into the anus and up through the rectum until the prostate gland is felt.

Any abnormality felt by the prostate doctor will then be tested further, for example using a flexible sigmoidoscopy, so that an exact diagnosis can be made. If the prostate is not inflamed and there appears to be cancerous growth then the prostate doctor will take a biopsy of the tissue to make sure it is in fact cancerous and not benign.

The prostate doctor will also put together a treatment schedule depending on the results of the biopsy. If the prostate is simply inflamed because of an infection then a course of antibiotics should suffice. If however, the increased size of the prostate is due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (or Hypertrophy) then surgery may be suggested in addition to a number of medications.

The worst case scenario for a patient with an enlarged prostate gland is undoubtedly prostate cancer and if this is the diagnosis then the prostate doctor will do a new set of medical tests in order to determine if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. The method of treatment will differ depending on how advanced the cancer is and how aggressively it is growing.

Prostate doctors are not always experts with regards to cancer treatments and so a diagnosis of prostate cancer will often result in the patient being assigned an oncologist, which is a cancer specialist. This ensures that the patient receives the best possible treatment and the prostate doctor is free to treat more new patients with prostate and urinary problems.
